Winter Wellness
Many people prefer to stay at home during winter rather than attend group classes. If you'd like to keep your practice going, my virtual programs are available and provide the same guided instruction as my in-person classes, giving you the flexibility to practise whenever it suits you.
If that feels right for you, you're very welcome to explore my virtual programs. Visit this page to find your Tai chi and Qigong virtual programs.
Tai Chi and Qigong in Canberra
Winter can affect energy levels, mobility, sleep and overall wellbeing. Gentle Tai Chi and Qigong movement helps support circulation, balance, flexibility and inner calm during the colder months. Suitable for all ages and abilities, these classes focus on slow mindful movement, breathing and body awareness to support both physical and mental wellbeing. Winter in Canberra can bring colder temperatures, reduced outdoor activity, and a tendency toward physical stiffness and social isolation. During this season, Tai Chi and Qigong offer gentle, accessible, and evidence-informed practices that support both physical and mental wellbeing across all age groups.
Tai Chi and Qigong are traditional mind-body disciplines that integrate slow, mindful movement, breath awareness, balance training, and relaxation. These practices are widely recognised for their suitability in community and clinical settings, particularly for older adults and individuals with reduced mobility. Regular practice may assist in improving balance, coordination, flexibility, circulation, and stress regulation, while also supporting overall quality of life.

Beyond their physical benefits, Tai Chi and Qigong play an important role in fostering community connection. Group practice creates a supportive environment where participants can engage socially, reduce isolation, and develop a sense of belonging—factors that are especially valuable during the winter months.
As winter settles in, the days grow shorter and the nights stretch longer. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), winter is a season of deep stillness and reflection. This is the time when nature turns inward and we are encouraged to do the same.

During this period, we have been practising the Tai Chi “The Eight Methods and Five Steps” (太极八法五步 – Bafa Wubu) program in several of our classes.
Bafa Wubu (八法五步) is a popular Tai Chi (Taiji 太極) routine systematically developed by the General Administration of Sport of China.
This short sequence was designed for beginners and is based on the common principles shared by different Tai Chi styles. It combines the fundamental Tai Chi methods (Eight Methods) with five essential steps, providing a structured way to develop balance, coordination, body awareness, and mindful movement.
Research on long-term practitioners of Tai Chi Bafa Wubu suggests that regular practice may help improve lower limb muscle strength, enhance joint control, and support functional movement of the lower body.
If you would like to learn more about Bafa Wubu or practise at home, you can find further information and practice videos on this page
